Makoto Sinkai. Probably, many lovers of full -length anime have already heard about him. And not only they, because the work of this director in recent years has been able to gain great popularity all over the world. The full -length Titles of Comics Wave, created by Sinkai are waiting for almost the whole world. It is enough to recall the long -awaited release of the film "Suzume closes the doors", which was represented in Japan in November last year. The rest of the world watched the film already in December 2022. The picture of Sinka, without a doubt, overtook all the other films in the film distribution of Japan and even in the United States showed herself very well. Many critics, reviewers, and just anime lovers consider Sinkaya an excellent, productive anime director and a worthy replacement of the great Hayao Miyazaki. And it is difficult to disagree with this, because “almost” all his works stand out markedly against the background of other full -length films. They have their own structure, have their own style of narrative and confidently hold the bar of quality. You can discuss and disassemble his work for quite some time. And not because in his works there are deep meanings or subtexts. His works are sometimes banal in terms of the plot and the conditional Title of the "Weather Child" cannot be compared with the "Walking Castle". But Sinchka does not need to be praised for philosophical reasoning or for the life of the highlights. What he definitely has is his own presentation and style. He knows how to present a story very beautifully and play on the feelings of the viewer. Almost all of his films are saturated with romance, tragedy, naivety, and of course, sensuality (hereinafter on the blog I will very often use this word, since it is precisely it that perfectly conveys the quality of the films of the synca, do not judge strictly). A lump in the soul and contradictions his films most likely will not leave the audience, but will still be remembered for a very long time.
Good day, dear readers. In this blog, I would like to share my thoughts and talk about all the full -length films of Japanese romance Makoto Sinkaya. What he wanted to convey to us with his animation? What is invested in his titles? And what works of his work deserve the most attention? Let’s look for answers).
I hope you will be interested. Enjoy reading!
Behind the clouds (kumo no mukou, yakusoku no bast) 2004:
You know, I pray for you to hear my song, wherever you are. I want to become kind and strong. I hope that our voices will echoed, and that one day we will hear each other. I hope we are still alive ..
Nitt Sayuri
The first full -length film Makoto Sinkaya was the anime Title "Behind the Clouds". The release took place back in 2004, although earlier a picture was also released by Sinkay, a vote of a distant star, a length of 25 minutes. But the latter was not considered a full -length. The painting "Behind the clouds" received many awards and approval from critics, becoming a kind of starting strip for further work of Sinchi. The Comics Wave studio at that time saw the great potential of the director of the animator and gave almost complete creative freedom.
The film itself turned out to be quite controversial. Then Sinkai was not yet fixed on teenage romanticism, and there was no only good picture, sensual atmosphere and a kind of musical accompaniment in priority. Sinkai also allowed himself to speculate on philosophical topics and made a picture in an alternative science fiction setting (and “behind the clouds” was the last science fiction director, although he often noted that this was his favorite genre). Added a lot of references to his works, for example, "she and her cat" or "Voice of a distant star". He also began to use his branded styles of visual narrative: display of typical household items, a quick change of frames to sad instrumental music, orders of characters, great attention to the details of the environment and shadows. In his further works, already typical for the synchy tricks, according to the type of visualization of cooking dishes, electric networks, passing trains, and so on will be added. In the same film, Sinkai decided to touch the quite familiar topics. This is first of all: the value of friendship, the emotional attachment of the characters for a long time, the desire to achieve your childhood dream, forgive and accept others, live and survive in the era of the Cold War.
And Sinkay certainly managed to affect the feelings of the audience, immerse them in a trance of a dramatic and interesting story, force them to empathize with the current heroes, rejoice at their successes and be sad with them. Trinity of very peculiar friends: Takuya Sirakava, Sayuri Savatari, Hiroki Fujisava were well opened in the film. Each hero was paid enough attention to his disclosure. Hiroca’s feelings for Sayuri and his inner experiences regarding the goal, the pain and loss of Sayuri herself, the contradiction in the character of Takui and his desire to complete the begun – all these feelings are transmitted very elegant and understandable. This favorably distinguished the work of Makoto Snowy from other full -lengths, as he always focused on the main characters and did not try to create a crowd of various actors who would only be discovered by half. The maestro very skillfully distributed the screen time of the heroes in the general timing and almost always laid out in these 90-120 minutes. Behind the clouds in this sense was also no exception.
Five centimeters per second (Byousoku 5 Senchimetoru) 2007:
All these years I ran forward, wanted to find something important, something unattainable, and, it seems, in the end, I was left with nothing. I did not know where this anxious thought came from, and was afraid to admit to myself that it was true and continued to work. Then I noticed that my heart is hardened day by day, and it becomes more unbearable to live. One morning I realized with horror that I still could not accept. It became clear to me how much I lost. I quit the company, and I realized that I was standing on the edge of the abyss ..
Takaki is toned
"Five centimeters per second" became the second full -length film Sinky and almost the main business card of the director. In this Title, he has already reached the limit of the transmission of tragic romanticism and love at a distance. The film is three mini-stories connected by one main character who is experiencing different intervals of his life. In the first chapter of the film, the main character himself (Takaki Tono) as a director tells and shows his story with a close friend (Akari Sinohara). Long expectations on the train, a sense of loss and anxiety of the protagonist, sensual and dramatic music, detailed landscapes, elaborate shadows and reflections – all these components from the first minutes attract attention to the film and force themselves to plunge into history. In the second chapter, Takaki moves to the village and studies at a local school, where a classmate falls in love with him. The main character does not reciprocate and this greatly harms the feelings of a friend and to himself. At heart, he also feels guilt and responsibility for what happened. The last chapter tells about the personal experiences of an adult takaki. The hero’s long and sad monologue fully reveals the doom, loss and pain of the character.
Here, too, without messages and subtexts, there were not. Tortuga Casino review Makoto Sinkai decided to touch the very familiar and sick themes of Luda by telling such a story. Is there a line between the real world and the world pleasant, sweet lies? At what turning point in life does a person realize his helplessness? Sinkai makes the viewer involuntarily ask just such questions after watching the film. "Five centimeters per second" naturally received positive reviews from the audience and critics. Although some reviewers noted the protractedness of some chapters, while the crumpledness of the whole plot. After this picture, Makoto Sinkai already realized what would do in the future. Inquiries for: Five centimeters per second – this is the speed of falling sakura leaves.
Loosy Voices (Hoshi O Ou Kodomo) 2011:
I heard the voice telling me to live, remembering the loss. This is the curse with which we people must live.
Shin
In the "Laders of Forgotten Voices" Sinkai decided to make some deviation from his usual topic and style, giving out a very ambiguous picture. It may seem to you that almost all of his work, for some reason, turn out to be ambiguous, but this is not so. His following works, for example, were quite clear and accents in them were set much better. In the same short films, for example, "she and her cat" or "someone’s gaze" he tells a small and understandable story. But sometimes the maestro also has malfunctions in creativity.
After the film "Five centimeters per second," Sinkai said that most of his previous works talked about people who were forced to part with those who are dear to them, and he wanted to develop this topic further and create work on how to overcome this loss. Thus, in 2011, the light saw the fabulous story of a sweet, positive girl Asuna. Spectators noted the dissimilarity of the picture for previous works by Sinka. They said that the author “took away” the fairy -tale worlds. In style, the film was suspiciously similar to the works of Hayao Miyazaki (Sinkai himself did not hide it and stated that he always watched with great interest the work of the “father” of the Japanese anime).
The film tells about the adventures of the main character Asuna around a different world. A meeting with a young man Shin sends her to a fairly long journey, where she meets a huge number of interesting characters. Here, in terms of visual performance and music, Sinky’s everything is as always on top. Landscapes are painted in the smallest details, shadows and reflection are visible to the naked eye, and the soundtracks organically fit into this elegant film. It blows some sensuality, as in other films of the director, and it is difficult to deny. But here you need to make a reservation. This film became the longest in timing (116 minutes) and, perhaps, the most experimental. Although the main features of Sinka were observed, there were quite few special metaphors and subtexts in the film. Even, the picture was not awarded with special awards, and according to the rating, it turned out to be slightly higher than average.
Garden of elegant words (kotonoha no niwa) 2013:
Thunder rumples in the distance are barely audible,
But even if you don’t have a rain –
I will stay,
Kohl you waging to stay.Takao Akidzuki
So it’s time to discuss the most unusual work of Makoto Sinkaya. The full-length 45-minute film of 2013 "Garden of Elegant Words" has become a real super-exclusion of all directorial tricks, maestro styles anime romance. Then he laid out to the full and gave out almost the saddest and most touching story in his entire career. Critics with this (my) opinion will not agree and say that the film is not bad, but can not be called the best work Sini. I previously devoted a separate blog to this picture, where I told various facts and personal impressions. And without any doubt, I personally consider this work to the best. Everything is done almost at an ideal level: an excellent and very sad plot, sensual and multifaceted characters, magnificent visual performance, conservative and classical musical accompaniment. If you can still argue about the plot, saying that there is no great sense in it, and that the director only told a banal dozed love story for failure, then there were no complaints about the presentation of this banal history at all.
The whole story was compressed to the maximum and perfectly transmitted in 45 minutes of timing. The film told about the schoolboy Takao, who wants to become a shoemaker, and slowly, but true, strives for his dream, as well as a mysterious and lost woman Yukino. Their conversations in the gazebo of the city park during heavy rain, monologues of the protagonist of Takao, the expectations of trains, cooking, daily routine under the strings of the piano – everything was done simply elegant. The director in this film decided to reflect precisely Japanese love, which is very difficult to describe. This difficulty naturally arose due to a special mentality, and Sinkai skillfully described all the components of romantic relations in his country. Subtexts and messages in the film were also certainly, although not in such a large number as in its early works. Makoto Sinka also noted the importance of this picture for himself, noting that it was with this film that he was completely satisfied, despite a rather modest success. He also said that the heroine of Yukino is his favorite character in his entire career.
Your name (kimi no na wa) 2016:
This feeling captured me for a long time. Probably that day. On the day when the stars poured from the sky. It seemed as if I were in a wonderful dream. There are only two words in my head – indescribable beauty.
Mitsukha Mijamizu
The film "Your Name" was the most successful film Makoto Sinky, making the director recognizable around almost the whole world. The picture was even shown in many cinemas of the world and became almost anime bestseller in history, even overtaking the paintings of Hayao Miyazaki. The director himself tried rather and made a light, understandable and pleasant story. He also did not change his style, and he brought some aspects of the director’s approach to perfection. Here is love at a distance, and the desire to achieve your ideal, and the desire to meet a suitable person. The characters and experiences of the main characters (the same and the Mutsukhi) are conveyed very worthy, and their reflection can respond in the soul of each viewer. Sinkai this time did not delve into the intricacies of romanticism and intimacy and more concentrated on the narrative. This time history does not seek to do something unusual and is essentially more entertaining. In the center of events is a village that is destroyed by a falling asteroid, and the heroes with the help of a temporary-awareness loop seek to save all the inhabitants of this village. In the course of history, the main characters learn more and more about each other, are imbued with feelings and exchange thoughts.
Without excellent pictures and music, it was not there either. “Your name” received many awards and in terms of the visual was quite worthy, although the “Garden of Extry Words” familiar with the Title noted a certain fall in the quality of the picture for the sake of greater dynamism. Separately, the soundtracks of the film and their quality should be noted. Cooperation by Sinka with the composer Yojiro Noda and the Radwimps group had its fruits, the music in the film has become almost a standard of quality for the coming years. The main composition of Sparkle has been in the top of musical charts for a very long time, and not only in Japan.
As a result, the film turned out to be worthy and not as contradictory as the past works of Sinka. Having made the film for the majority, the director received many awards, contributed to the development of the anime of the industry.
Tenki no ko) 2019:
Amazing this thing – weather. Who would have thought that the human mood depends so much on what color the sky.
Walking Morishim
The next film Sinka, released in the summer of 2019, was very similar to "Your name". This time the director did not deviate from his style and approach, and therefore released for the most part an entertaining and romantic picture. The events of the film take place in the same universe as “your name” (many references and episodic outputs of the main characters of the previous anime and Mitsuhi hint at this). The main character of Khodak in search of a better life leaves his village and moves to Tokyo. There he meets Hina Amano and her younger brother Nagi. During the film, the hero also meets many different characters, gets closer to them, quarrels and discusses, seeks to find a common with Hina and solve the secret of her supernatural abilities (change the weather).
The story in this regard is very saturated, interesting and dynamic. Heroes are constantly developing, their characters change depending on the situation, there are intrigues and plot turns. The creators pretty tried and gave out a very pleasant and beautiful picture, which could be pleased to watch in many cinemas of the world. Sinkai and this time did not disappoint and saturated the narrative with romanticism, sensuality and drama. In terms of philosophical thoughts, the film did not become a great revelation. It seems that all subtle feelings, messages and flights of fantasies were spent on his past work. Sinkai decided to make the latest films in a more banal way, focusing mainly on visual and music. They are also very worthy here. When viewing, there was a feeling that music was even more important than dialogues and sounds of the environment. Critics and spectators met the film with approval, but to become as successful as "five centimeters per second" or "Your name" he failed.
Short films Makoto Sinkaya:
There is such a word – "world". More recently, I considered the world the space in which mobile communications is available. But now. The distance between us is increasing. And the time to get the letter also needs more. The satellite gives priority to official messages. I am losing a view of the border of our world. Sometimes I stop understanding where I am now.
Mikako Nagamine (heroine from anime, the voice of a distant star ,,)
In addition to full-length films, Makoto Sinkai during his career also released short paintings, lasting 2-5 minutes. He did it mainly for himself and did not try to win the attention of the audience with his shorts. His first films were mostly black paintings, with the help of which he developed his abilities and experimented. The most significant Title was the 25-minute anime film "The Voice of the distant star", published in 2002. In the genre, he looked more like a fur-beer, although he contained a teenage romance familiar to the director. You can also recall such paintings as: "She and her cat" in 1999, which became a ticket for further cooperation with Comics Wave; The penetrating and bright mini-film "someone’s gaze", 2013. Sinkai always tried to experiment, find something new for future titles, tell complex, ambiguous stories and did not forget about his corporate identity. Despite the unnecessary modesty of the director, he can be called outstanding figures of anime art without any doubt.
Results:
When you are a teenager, you no longer know what you know, and more people you have not met than you met. I felt this when I was a teenager, and I think that perhaps in my films I am aimed at adults who remember this feeling.
Makoto Sinkai
All of the above odes addressed to Sinka and were unnecessary, but most likely no one will deny the influence of his work. Of course, in addition to the works of Sinchka in the world of anime, there are worthy paintings from other eminent directors. For example: "Form of the voice", "Decorate the farewell morning with the flowers of promises", "I want to eat your pancreas", "Wolf children Ame and Yuki". All these full-length films are good in their own way and have a lot in common with the films of Snowy. But of all the current Japanese animation figures, he clearly stands out. His works have something intangible, have a special structure, skillfully play on the feelings of the viewer, make them laugh-piston-praise, plunge into a story that is very pleasant for the eyes and souls. Only for this you can call Makoto Sinkaya real maestro of Japanese romance.
